Class Schedule Changes: Fall 2018
Beginning in Fall 2018, UNC Charlotte will resume offering classes in 50-minute blocks on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This is a change from the current schedule, which offers most classes in 75-minute blocks twice a week — usually Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday. There will be a 15-minute transition period between each class.
Please note: Faculty who still wish to teach 75-minute classes twice a week or a 150-minute class once a week on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday may do so after 2:30 p.m.
Tuesday/Thursday classes will continue to be 75 minutes.

Background
In Fall 2015, Chancellor Philip L. Dubois appointed a campus congestion task force, led by Professor Richard Buttimer, to review the causes of campus congestion and to make recommendations to help relieve these issues.
After nearly a year of work, the task force submitted 34 recommendations in four areas: roads and physical layouts, parking, campus transit and campus operations. Among the recommendations was to resume offering classes in 50-minute blocks on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
The current schedule, with most classes meeting in 75-minute blocks two days of the week, began approximately 10 years ago. At the time, the campus was expanding rapidly with the creation of the Charlotte Research Institute (CRI) and the University didn’t have the transportation infrastructure in place to help faculty and students move quickly between classes. Now, with the enhanced Niner Transit service and changes in how classes are scheduled, this concern has been greatly reduced.
Benefits
The change to the class schedule will not only help disperse the campus population across five days, it will also help stagger the departure times at the end of the day, when on-campus traffic can be most challenging.
In addition to helping campus congestion, it is important the University demonstrates it is effectively managing its classroom resources, which can affect funding for capital projects. In the current model, there is a significant gap in the number of students in classrooms on Friday than other days of the week. In fall 2016, the difference was more than 50 percent, as shown in the chart below (click chart for larger image).
The change to class scheduling will help equalize classroom utilization, enhancing the University’s competitiveness for future resources. Additionally, by making better use of instructional capacity across all five days, students will have better accessibility to classes, helping them complete their degrees on time.
Finally, the change to class scheduling will help enhance the campus experience for students. Research has shown that Friday classes lead to better engagement with the college community and campus programming, both throughout the week and into the weekend.
