Taking Flight: Soaring Through Civic Engagement During the 2024 Election Season

At UNC Charlotte, everyone can learn about and be a part of important discussions and processes that shape our society. The general election is in November, so it’s important to think about resources that can help you get involved in your community and in democracy. Join Dr. Tamara Johnson, Director of Engaged Scholarship, and Erica Solosky, Associate General Counsel and Director of Ethics, Policy, and Compliance, as they talk about how UNC Charlotte helps students, faculty, and staff learn about civic engagement and voting. This training will also discuss what it means, as a University employee, to participate in political activities.

Using Course Coordination to Improve Teaching and Learning

In this interactive workshop, we will explore some of the whats and whys of course coordination, to consider why departments may want to coordinate courses, what elements might be coordinated, and what impacts course coordination might have on student learning and retention. 

Our speaker, Dr. Wendy Smith, will be facilitating this workshop via zoom. We will be broadcasting the event in the Science Building room 104 for those of you who wish to participate in the workshop in a group setting with colleagues. Alternatively, you are welcome to join using the zoom link that will be provided upon registration.

The Office of International Programs and the Office of Identity, Equity and Engagement invite you to join the 2024 UNC Charlotte International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration on March 20, where faculty, staff and students nominated for their work in global efforts will be recognized. We encourage a strong campus turnout in celebration of International Women’s Day, and we extend a warm welcome to all who wish to attend. As part of our annual tradition, The Charlotteans Women’s Choir will deliver a special performance. Director Ginger Wyrick has carefully curated songs that resonate with the theme of Women’s Day, adding a beautiful and meaningful touch to the celebration. Our keynote speaker for the event will be Sil Ganzó, Executive Director of OurBRIDGE, a not-for-profit organization that supports the refugee and immigrant communities in Charlotte. Her insights and experiences promise to inspire and enlighten us all. The celebration will take place on March 20 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Popp Martin Student Union, Room 340. The Office of International Programs welcomes the campus community to an International Speaker Series event. H.E. Masood Khan, the Ambassador of Pakistan, will present on Thursday, March 21, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m in Cone Center 113. Khan will address the topic, “Perspectives on Pakistan’s pivotal role in the world and South Asia’s complex geopolitical challenges.” Register.

The BRIDGES Academic Leadership Program offers the opportunity to develop and strengthen leadership skills, knowledge, and networking in order to be successful change agents in communities. BRIDGES is an inclusive professional development program dedicated to supporting cisgender or transgender women and nonbinary colleagues in higher education who seek to gain or strengthen their academic leadership capabilities, and/or individuals who demonstrate a commitment to supporting women and gender issues and equity in the academy. Individuals of any gender identity who want to position themselves for advancement in the academy and/or who demonstrate a strong interest or commitment to supporting women and gender equity in the academy are encouraged to apply. The 2nd Annual Charlotte AI Institute for Smarter Learning will be held on Wednesday, May 15 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Dubois Center. This is a free event for all UNC Charlotte faculty and staff.

The 49er Family Fund annually allocates grants to campus initiatives related to student life at UNC Charlotte. These allocations help fund programming on campus that might otherwise be unable to be funded by a campus department, student organizations, etc. The 49er Family Fund seeks to serve as a funding catalyst for innovative, high-impact programs that benefit the larger campus community. The proposal form for the 2024-2025 academic year is available online; proposals should be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 1. For questions, contact family@uncc.edu.

Atkins Tower Closure

Atkins Library will undergo significant renovations beginning in June, to enhance the safety and comfort of students, faculty, staff, alumni, retired employees and friends of the University. The renovations include replacing the tower elevators, upgrades to the fire alarm and smoke control systems and transforming the study spaces on floors five through 10. The project will begin in June 2024 and is expected to be completed by December 2025. More information.

Open Access Policy Information Sessions

Atkins Library has been working with the Office of Legal Affairs to develop a campuswide open access policy. An open access policy would enable the university to archive the full text of faculty journal articles in UNC Charlotte’s open repository, Niner Commons. This aligns with UNC Charlotte’s existing copyright policy, under which faculty grant the university a non-exclusive license to use their work for non-commercial educational and research uses. You can attend an information session on March 18th or 20th at 12pm to learn more about the policy. Register.

Media Literacy Matters Conference

Join the Critical Media Literacy Collaborative, Niner Times, and Atkins Library for “Media Literacy Matters: Current Landscape, Student Actions, and Future Directions” on March 21 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This half-day conference will bring faculty, students, and researchers across campus together to discuss issues related to media literacy. The Big Read Book Discussion 

Join Atkins Library for a book discussion of “Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi. “Homegoing” is a powerful novel that traces the lives of two half-sisters and their descendants, spanning over 300 years and multiple generations. Set in Ghana and America, the book explores the legacy of slavery and the impact it has on the lives of the characters.In partnership with the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts+Culture.

Join this workshop if you are a beginning user of ChatGPT. This hands-on workshop will cover an introduction to generative AI and ChatGPT. Participants will set-up a ChatGPT account, learn how Generative AI produces a response, practice prompting with ChatGPT, experiment with personalized learning techniques, and practice producing instructional materials that could be used in your courses.

Canvas Studio for Video Quizzes

In this workshop, you will learn to use Canvas Studio’s in-video quiz feature to embed interactive quiz questions at specific points in videos. Supporting Students as Difficult Events Impact our World

Difficult news is everywhere recently—climate disasters, refugee crises, political unrest, the war between Ukraine and Russia, and the latest conflict between Israel and Hamas for example.  While these events can negatively impact our students’ ability to focus on academics, they can also create opportunities to engage in meaningful and honest discussions about difficult and important topics. This workshop is designed to provide faculty with the confidence, strategies, and resources to help students process their emotions and talk about the complex nature of these events with sensitivity to the diverse perspectives of all students.

Designing and Implementing Group Projects

Group work is a high impact educational practice that can have a significant effect on student success.
