The Black Read
Join Atkins Library to read and discuss passages from Black Literature, speeches, and correspondence. Bring what you would like to read or reach out to Adreonna Bennet or Randi Beem to request library materials for the event. Fostering Constructive Disagreement in Student Discourse
Kevin Marinelli, teaching associate professor and executive director for the Program for Public Discourse at UNC Chapel Hill, will share practical insights gleaned from his experience teaching rhetoric and directing the Program for Public Discourse. He will focus on constructive dialogue in the classroom and across campus, including approaches to public dialogue and deliberation, classroom exercises and student development. Participants will leave with a toolkit of rhetorical activities, best practices and theoretical perspectives. More information.

Women’s History Month Tribute Submissions
The UNC Charlotte Women + Girls Research Alliance is accepting tribute submissions for Women’s History Month. Submissions are open to students, staff & alumni as well as any Charlotte community members. We are looking for tributes to any women in your life, on campus, in our community or any other influential women you would like to acknowledge. Submissions are due by 11:59 p.m. on February 22. Last Week for URC 2023 Registration
Remember to please have your students register for UNC Charlotte’s Undergraduate Research Conference (URC) 2023, which will be held in the Popp Martin Student Union on Tuesday, April 25. The URC 2023 registration will close at 5:00 p.m. this Friday, February 24. Students are required to submit an abstract of their research project as part of the registration. More details.
The URC 2023 organizing committee is also seeking faculty, staff, and doctoral students to serve as judges for the conference. Those interested in this service opportunity should complete the URC 2023 Judges Recruitment Form by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 24. Provide Positive Feedback to Students via New Feature in CONNECT
We are rolling out a new feature in CONNECT this week that allows instructors to provide kudos/positive feedback to students. Instructors in 1000/2000 courses will receive a progress report similar to Early Alert reporting. Participation is optional. The report will close out on Monday, February 27. Nexus: Networking Across Disciplines 2023
Nexus: Networking Across Disciplines fosters the emergence of interdisciplinary research teams by providing faculty with structured opportunities to learn about one another’s research and brainstorm areas of mutual interest. Through a series of workshops several months apart, Nexus supports the initial stages of project development as faculty formulate shared research questions, consider analytical strategies, and identify potential funding sources.Nexus 2023 will target faculty in two research areas of focus and distinction: 1) Socioeconomic Mobility and 2) Urban Health. Workshops will be held on May 17-18 and August 17, 2023, with working groups expected to brainstorm ideas over the summer. Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 31. Each faculty member in Nexus will receive a $1,000 stipend for participating fully in the workshops. For more information, please join us on Monday, March 13, from 4:30-6:00 p.m. in the Lambla Gallery of the Storrs Building (RSVP). We will celebrate successes of interdisciplinary working groups that formed through Nexus 2022 and discuss target research areas for Nexus 2023. Nexus is organized by the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies and the Division of Research with support from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, the Cato College of Education, and the College of Health and Human Services. Applications Open for Next Gambrell Faculty Fellows Cohort
The UNC Charlotte Urban Institute is seeking the fifth cohort of faculty fellows to research issues related to economic mobility in the Charlotte region, with support from The Gambrell Foundation. This year, the Gambrell Faculty Fellows program will fund up to six projects with grants up to $18,000 each. The fellows will join a growing group of researchers contributing to our community’s ongoing search for solutions that could foster greater equity. Previous cohorts of Gambrell Faculty Fellows include faculty from seven colleges and 15 different academic disciplines. More information.
Global Gateways Program Application Now Open
The Office of International Programs is excited to announce that applications for Global Gateways are now open to all Charlotte students interested in “global living on campus.” Global Gateways is an on campus residential program where students from diverse backgrounds live together to learn and appreciate differences and other cultures. Global Gateways was established in the fall of 2013 as a residential community where students work on understanding themselves as cultural beings, strengthen their intercultural competence, and practice interaction within an intercultural environment. Additionally, students gain skills in event planning and time management in the program. Marian Beane Crossing Borders Writing Contest
The Office of International Programs invites UNC Charlotte students who are interested in sharing their international experiences to enter the Marian Beane Crossing Borders writing contest. The contest was developed in 2004 by Marian Beane, the former Director of the International Students and Scholars Office within the Office of International Programs. Beane continues this tradition in hopes that this contest serves as a constructive way for students to reflect on the value of international living and its impact on personal growth. Nominations for Faculty and Student International Education Awards Now Open
The Office of International Programs is pleased to accept nominations (including self-nominations) for the 2023 Faculty International Education Award and the 2023 Student International Education Award. The Faculty International Education Award recognizes a faculty member for outstanding contributions to the enhancement of the international education experience at UNC Charlotte. Areas of excellence may include: teaching, research, curriculum development, program development, grant writing, university service, and/or community service.
The Student International Education Award recognizes outstanding contributions and involvement in international programs and studies at UNC Charlotte. For nomination and application information as well as eligibility criteria, visit the International Education Awards website. Nomination deadline: March 10; application deadline: March 24.
