SOAR Moving to Enrollment Management

Effective January 2023, SOAR (Student Orientation and Academic Resources) will move from Student Affairs to Enrollment Management. The Transition & Success Initiatives staff will manage all aspects of spring 2023 SOAR and the transition will begin after that. Enrollment Management will lead student SOAR beginning summer 2023. Transition details are being handled jointly by Claire Kirby and Dennis Wiese. Claire Kirby is the point of contact for any questions.

Phi Kappa Phi Faculty & Staff Reception

The Office of Academic Affairs and the UNC Charlotte Chapter of the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi invite you to attend a faculty and staff reception on Thursday, November 10, 4:00–6:00 p.m. in the Halton Reading Room of Atkins Library. This is a great opportunity to get to know one another and welcome new faculty and staff. Complimentary food and beverages will be provided.

International Education Week 2022

The Office of International Programs (OIP) invites the UNC Charlotte community to celebrate the University’s commitment to international education and global learning during International Education Week, November 14-18. International Education Week is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Departments of Education and State and celebrates our human diversity, intercultural connections, and cultural understanding. During International Education Week, participants can expect globally-focused dialogue, lectures from experts in the field, performances from diverse cultures, films from around the world, and much more. Join the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute and keynote speaker Dr. Karen Chapple, a founder of the Urban Displacement Project and Director of School of Cities at the University of Toronto, to explore the answers to these questions. A reception honoring the Gambrell Faculty Fellows will immediately follow the Forum.

W+GRA Executive Director and UNC Charlotte Faculty Discuss Impact of Pandemic in Black Women and da ‘Rona

The COVID-19 pandemic was life-changing for many across the globe. For Black women, the pandemic exacerbated existing issues that extended beyond socio-economic parameters to contending with mental, physical and emotional challenges. These collective experiences and the need to create safe spaces for Black Women and their families are captured in Black Women and da ‘Rona: Community, Consciousness and Ethics of Care, a new book that is set to be published in April 2023 by the University of Arizona Press. Dr. Michelle Meggs, Executive Director of the Women + Girls Research Alliance (W+GRA), a division of urbanCORE at UNC Charlotte, was one of the writers for a chapter entitled “Da Rona and a Virtual Kitchen Table Politics of Community.” W+GRA Seed Grant recipients and UNC Charlotte faculty Dr. Tehia Starker Glass, Dr. Kendra Jason, and Dr. Janaka B. Lewis, along with colleagues Dr. Candace S. Brown and Kaja Dunn, also co-wrote a chapter in Black Women and da ‘Rona discussing mother-schooling as a way to curate children’s educational experiences during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. They represent nineteen contributing writers from diverse interdisciplinary fields and backgrounds that explore Black feminine community, consciousness, ethics of care, spirituality and social critique. Center for Teaching and Learning Workshops

Developing a Fundable SoTL Proposal
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) is a growing movement in post-secondary education. SOTL is scholarly inquiry into student learning which advances the practice of teaching by making research findings public. Therefore, SoTL is a way to integrate the teaching and scholarship dimensions of faculty work. To promote faculty engagement in SoTL, UNC Charlotte offers a SoTL grant program through the Center for Teaching and Learning. This workshop provides an introduction to SoTL that encourages its use as a bridge between the teaching and research domains of faculty work. It will also cover the SoTL grant RFP for the current year and encourage faculty to consider projects which may be eligible for this program.

Enhancing Cultural Awareness
This course is facilitated by the Office of International Programs. The training will present an overview of the common definition and assessment of culture at UNC Charlotte and explore cultural dimensions based on theory and research. Participants will receive resources for sample assignments and a mapping exercise to enhance student cultural awareness. This is an online, asynchronous training session over three days. There is no set meeting time. This workshop counts towards the Essentials of Teaching and Learning Certificate.

Making Textbook Affordability a Reality for Your Students
Are you interested in making your course more affordable, but unsure exactly how to go about it? Learn how the library can support you to find and implement open textbooks for your courses to lower the costs for students. We will showcase prominent examples, places to look, and discuss the services of specialists that are available to you. We will also give you resources on how to use and adapt these materials in your classroom. This workshop is delivered by Atkins Library.

Using Cognitive Empathy in the Classroom
Adversity outside the classroom has always seeped into the classroom via multiple pathways. However, in today’s environment, it is impossible to ignore how life challenges instructors’ ability to educate and students’ ability to learn. In this workshop, Dr. Jeanette Bennett leads a 60 min virtual workshop on what is and how to incorporate use of cognitive empathy to strengthen the learning environment of the classroom, whether traditional, 100% online, or somewhere in between. The workshop includes multi-methods: short lectures, group discussions, and other activities. Please join us for an active session where everyone will (hopefully) learn something new.

College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Events

SPECIAL VENUE ANNOUNCED: Personally Speaking: Rituals, Runaways, and the Haitian Revolution
The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, together with The Dubois Center at UNC Charlotte Center City and J. Murrey Atkins Library, presents its next Personally Speaking series event at The Union at Station West in the FreeMoreWest neighborhood. Crystal Nicole Eddins, Ph.D. will present Rituals, Runaways, and the Haitian Revolution: Collective Action in the African Diaspora, which explores how enslaved people’s resistance leading up to the Haitian Revolution offers interesting lessons about collective action. This event is being held at The Union at Station West in the FreeMoreWest Neighborhood on the West End of Charlotte. The Union at Station West was founded to create a truly communal space for the neighborhood, featuring partnerships between its food and beverage tenants and offering a large outdoor patio to foster engagement and conversation. It is accessible to Freedom Drive and walkable from the surrounding neighborhoods of Wesley Heights and Seversville. In this way, we are welcoming Charlotte community members to enjoy an evening with the University, at no charge, learning about our research and sharing ideas about the topic.

UNC Charlotte GIS Day
Please encourage your graduate and undergraduate students to attend UNC Charlotte GIS Day on November 16. The event is designed to teach students about geography and Geographic Information Science and to share the real-world applications that are improving society. There is a full schedule of activities planned with some fun activities midday. Also, remind students to check out the newly installed Department of Geography and Earth Sciences Globe in the courtyard outside of McEniry.
